IRISH SECTION NEWS AUGUST
June saw many of us away on trips, George Kavanagh,
Girlfriend Karen and some friends were in France .George and
Karen were trying out his new RT1200 and they were that
delighted with it that in the beautiful setting of Chinon
they got engaged. So congratulations to them both. No one
can accuse George of being slow again!
June 13 saw the North West “Christmas Dinner” and as I was
unable to be there due to attending the NCM, John Cousins
kindly supplies the following report.
“The North West Region met at the Murrisk Tavern, close to
Co Mayo’s renowned Croagh Patrick on June 13th
for an annual lunch. Actually, their Christmas lunch!
Cancelled on two occasions in January due to appalling
weather, there was obviously a great deal to celebrate, and
it proved so successful that a skiing weekend in Mayo is now
being planned for August. A summer holiday is also mooted
for December, probably in Co. Donegal! Rather more
seriously, John and Mary Couzens, with Pam Kay, later
watched from a nearby carpark as a rescue helicopter landed
close to the top of Croagh Patrick. A mountain rescue team
brought down a seriously injured walker to the helicopter to
be flown to a local hospital”
The Ballykeeran camping on the 18th&19th
went off brilliantly with over 30 people attending over the
weekend in absolutely glorious weather. It was great to see
some of our newer members out enjoying themselves. The pint
and pizza offer in The Dog & Duck was taken up on Saturday
night.
The Thatch in Kinsale on 17th-19th
September is filling up quickly but check with Brendan Lang
on 086 2555214 as there may be places left. The Northwest
Hotel Weekend this year in Leenane is also booking well as
it is great value at €99pps for two B&B and two five course
evening meals check their website
www.leenanehotel.com
As the National Rally is in Coleraine this year it is an
ideal chance for our section members to attend this large
club event and I am sure that the Ulster section will inject
some Irish craic into it. Any of you thinking of attending
please let myself or Brendan know and we could meet up for
the weekend.

SECTION NEWS JULY
Well its mid summer as your reading this and I really hope
we’re getting
one this year. Back in May Dave Browne and Shelly attended
the
BMWMOA French Connection rally, a good time was had by all
and
Dave tells me more Irish section members are requested to
attend next
year as they like us!
The first weekend in May four Irish section members met up
with eight
lads from Hull for a trip to the Scottish Highlands, though
not a BMW
Club event a lot of the lads on the run are Club members.
Thanks lads
for a great weekend, sometimes it’s really great to be led
on runs and
not have to organise anything and this was my third “good
weather” trip
to the Highlands, blessed I know! When I think about it,
without being a
Club member I would have known only one of the lads on the
trip (Irish
lads included) previously. This to me is one of the great
advantages
of membership of this Club, making and fostering friendships
through
motorcycling.
Liam Quinlan’s Tuesday evening runs are in full swing and he
tells me
being well attended. Every Tuesday evening for the summer,
leaving
from Keary’s Motorrad Cork at 1830. Contact Liam on 086
8252774 if
you would like more information. While were in Cork I’d like
to wish Mick
Allen luck with his new K1300S and I believe a new Adventure
is on
order too. No recession in Cork.
We have a great opportunity to attend a National Rally this
year as the
Ulster section is holding the Summer National Rally in
Coleraine Rugby
grounds. This promises to be a top class event and it’s right
beside us so
get on your bikes and go. Details and booking forms in the
journal.
Brendan Lang our Booking Secretary tells me there is still
some places
left on the Irish Boreen Run on 31 July -1 August, this year
it starts
from Keary’s in Cork and Liam Quinlan is the run Leader.
There is
some places left on the Thatch Rally in Kinsale but be
warned it is filling
Bookings are also
being taken now for the October hotel weekend 15-
16 in Leenane Co Galway two nights B&B and two five course
evening
meals €99 Check out the website on www.leenanehotel.com this
is
really good value and extra nights can be arranged at
preferential rates
for those wishing to stay longer or travelling from the UK.
Our new event this year is The Hog Roast/Ride to Meat in
Thurles
Rugby Grounds on the Saturday 17 July. €20 gets you all you
can eat,
the entertainment and camping. We would like members to
prebook this
as it will give us better information for organising the
food. Too little and
we’ll be hungry, too much and it will be pork sandwiches for
the rest of
the summer for the organisers.
Any UK based member reading this, take the Club President
Dick
Boyd’s advice and get across to one of our events enjoy the
craic and
get good value for your Sterling

June
Thirteen of us from the Irish Section crossed over to
Caernarfon for the AGM and aside
from the politics we all had a great weekend. New members
Barry and Derek Courtney on
their F650’s stayed in the campsite with five more of us and
though quite cold was good
craic. A trip to the Gelert shop in Beddgelert to purchase
better cold weather gear sorted
out the cold. John Freely led a group from the Cork-Swansea
route. John does like his
nightly cruises it must be the rocking motion that helps his
sleep, I’ve just heard he has won
a car so I’m sure you will all join me in congratulating him
on that. It will be great back up
transport in case anything goes wrong with the Vstrom . An
anxious B&B owners nerves
were calmed on the late arrival of the Meagher brothers.
Somebody should have told him
we’re Irish and though we may be late we will arrive in good
order so keep the head and
don’t panic. And what about Roundy, a club member not yet a
year and already attending
his second AGM. People would be wise to watch this ambitious
rising star within the club.
Liam Quinlan had nine on his run to south Wales on the May
bank holiday weekend.
I’m told all enjoyed the great roads and all chicken strips
have been worn off their tyres.
The excursion to the Welsh farmyard was an interesting
change and quite educational
diversion for some. GPS, sometimes hard to live with it and
even harder without it!
June 19-20 sees the revival of the Ballylkeeran family
camping weekend. The campsite is
located on the shores of Lough Ree three miles from Athlone
on the N55. Anyone interested
in attending should contact our social secretary Dave Browne
on 0870525271.
Bookings are now been taken for the Hog Roast in Thurles on
17 July , the Irish boreen
run on the 31 July-1 Aug and the Thatch weekend in Kinsale.
The Thatch weekend is
limited numbers so book early to avoid disappointment. All
bookings to Brendan Lang
