About the Mercia Section, the kingdom and area
The MERCIA section is one of 15 sections making up the BMW Club. The club is a motorcycle club who's members are interested in BMW motorcycles.
The section was formed in 1992, the name being chosen from the ancient "KINGDOM of MERCIA" which covered the area where most of the Mercia section founders were living at the time. At it's peak, the kingdom of MERCIA stretched from the Humber river, south towards London & Kent, as far west as Offa's Dyke, east to Anglia. If the same were true today, it would be the largest county in the United Kingdom.
The ancient capital of Mercia was Repton in Derbyshire (now famous for it's private school, which arose out of the ashes of the Dissolution of the Monasteries in 1557). Some people argue that Tamworth is the capital of Mercia, well it was the last capital town, before Mercia was swallowed up into the Kingdom of Wessex around 919AD.
It is natural then that our main meeting place, is in the Capital of ancient Mercia - Repton, in the Village Hall. this venue provides all the facilities we need to put on food and drink (Tea & Coffee and also hot food for events such as the New Year breakfast, Pie and Peas, etc).
We look forward to seeing you there sometime. You can check on the events, dates and times on the Diary and Latest News pages.
