Section News 2011

Clubman Winner
At our Christmas Lunch The South East Section awarded the Club Man and Club Lady of the Year to Kelvin and Paula Duff. The Runners Up were, Ron Rugman and Linda Thomas. Unfortunately Linda was not able to attend. These were awarded according to points accrued by attending Meets and Runs so no surprise that a couple always out together should get top marks. This year we gave bonus points to those who lead runs, Ron, especially prominent as a willing and competent leader and extra points for attending National events. Linda managed Club lady Runner Up before a minor “accident” kept herself and Alan off the road for a few weeks, glad to see her back on as soon as she was able, grit and determination there then. A close run thing. The Chairmans Shield was awarded to Rosemary Warner as thanks for all the hard work she has put in for the club during 2010 and 2011, organizing social events, and cooking cakes etc which we have all enjoyed. Brenda was presented with a potted Lilly in appreciation of her general help with social events and particularly how she collects cash for our raffle each night, usually as they come through the door! Elaine Bronger, our Treasurer for many years was also awarded the same for her service to the section, unfortunately our stand in photographer was still holding her flowers so missed the pic. Well Done to all these people.
December 2011
It’s the shortest day and I am writing notes for the Journal for February with Christmas just 4 days away. We have had our Christmas lunch which was very good, the food and company were fantastic, but I have to say we were missing some important people, namely Shaun our Secretary and our infamous retired Secretary Brian and Margaret Shears, we hope that they make full recovery from their illnesses and are able to enjoy their Christmases. After lunch I awarded Elaine our Treasurer and Brenda who once again has collected our raffle money on our club nights, with a potted orchid each, to say thank you to both ladies for their support and help throughout the year. As a complete surprise and shock I was awarded the Chairman’s Shield for my efforts this year. I was totally stunned and delighted to receive this award, which was last year awarded to Margaret Shears for all her hard work supporting Brian as Secretary what a hard act to follow. I have not been with the club that long and this was my first year with Lou my husband as Social Secretary and now with a few events under my belt things can only get better and I am looking forward to planning the next year’s functions for you all. Also the huge floral arrangement that I was given is still looking as good as when I received them, thank you. Also may I say a big thank you to all the committee members for their support and hard work because without them the events and club meetings, ride outs would not happen. Thank to all members for supporting the club. Best wishes Rosemary Yup, I missed a good meal, I must have been bad! Thanks to Rose, Dave D, and Kelvin for doing the ceremonial bit and the pics from Brenda show they all enjoyed themselves. Our run on the 4th attracted a small group where we went to The Llama Farm, Ashdown Forest. We had a good snack and some did some Xmas shopping. Our other run from Coopers on the 14th became a delivery of The Diary to The Sorting House at Burgess Hill, led by Ron, thanks for that as they have now been circulated from there with the Journal. I got them as far as Coopers but then cried off as poorly. Prize for the dirtiest bike (the promise of a wash next year) went to my R1150RT. All the others were very well presented so unfair to label them as “dirtiest” I have no shame. I rode down to The Roebuck on 9th where we had our small gathering joined by Gary and Cathy McDonald at their first meet with us. (I was particularly pleased they joined after I earoled Gary at Wessons only the Sunday before) Pictures supplied by Paula where their small group enjoyed Xmas Day at the seafront, playing music and singing, they say passers by were amused. At The Dog and Duck it was nice to meet the locals and for Kelvin and Paula, that's a long way from Meopham. Are there any more local members around that may enjoy a chat if not the meal. The staff make it very pleasant for us with our own table. Coming up on Feb 5th I have a run, to somewhere warm and sunny with good food hopefully. Please note as requested our Sunday 26th, Lunchtime run leaves at 1pm to make the most of the light (and sunny weather) We will also be off to The Rhino for 17th/19th Feb. You do not need to book if camping. Come join us, its fun, honest. Hope you all had a lovely Christmas and all the best for 2012. Shaun.X
November 2011
Our Guest Speaker for our November meeting was a surprise, it was Shaun Mulligan.( Filling in while the real speakers got set up) It was a relaxed meeting with Shaun chatting and everyone joining in. Then Dave Deacon and Ron Rugman entertained us with tales of their recent trip to Spain which has now wetted our appetites so a few of us are now planning our trips to Spain, thank you lads. While a few hardy members braved the Rhino Rally, ( it actually turned out quite mild and mostly dry ) the rest of us enjoyed a bonfire party at Matty’s. The weather forecast for the evening was dreadful, but it turned out to be a perfect evening mild and dry so after eating our banger in a bun and a few cakes, we watched a dazzling firework display then turned around and watched firework extravaganza from the Hop Farm just across the road. Once again many thanks to Matty and his family for the use of their field. Thanks also to his granddaughter for her guitar playing and her singing it was a lovely ending to the evening. Just a reminder, the New Year’s Party at Poultwood Golf Centre is on 7 January so please let me have names as soon as possible. We will discuss this at the Xmas Lunch, there will be a small charge as we are having a disco after the buffet, we will have the disco at the end of the room, so those members who like to chat will have a quiet area to talk. Hope this is OK with everyone. Thanks to Rosemary for the above. The Autumn Leaves run with Kevin had 7 bikes go via “The Ocean” Dymchurch ending at Beech Court Garden Café (open for us!), poor weather but an enjoyable day out. The Wednesday run from Coopers got away to a very unsure start as our section secretary decided to take the majority of the run home with him, good one Sec. ( Apologies for that and just as well I realised, stopped and redirected them.) Fortunately someone realised the mistake and we reassembled behind the leader for a second attempt. The run towards Dungeness went smoothly but upon approaching Tenterden our lady navigator decided to keep things interesting by diverting to Faversham without letting on! During lunch Mr Barlow expressed his displeasure at not frequenting his usual haunt so the party then retired to Headcorn for coffee and dessert. A small group met at Polhill on the 27th and after lunch rode off to Rye Harbour for a cup of tea. (Its getting late in the year and its good to note where places will be open. What would we do without Rye Harbour and Headcorn airfield. Just drop in there and you meet all and sundry.) Thanks Paula for reports. The Hippo, as noted above was quite mild, we had a pleasant ride down, Ian C, John Stewart, Clive and myself (Shaun) although tested by the occasional heavy shower. We had good fortune and put the tents up before it rained again. Us, The South East Section were the sole customers in the Colliford Tavern on the Thursday, had a lovely meal and a few drinks, getting back to the tents and into sleeping bags before it tipped it down again. Breakfasted we had a lovely run following Clive with his Satnav to Tavistock with its interesting shops and “Pannier Market”. On Saturday we walked to the local Stone Age village where we saw a pile of old rocks. The entertainment as usual was fun, Friday night there is Karaoke Night and one of our number (Brian V??! prefers to be nameless or blameless ) actually sang Old Shep with not a dry ear in the place. Thanks go to Sally Robinson and Les Madge (for the pasties) and The South West team for putting on another enjoyable Hippo. Phil`s run turned into mine (Shaun`s) run as we swapped dates. We went to Tangmere Air Museum. Lovely scenery, sweeping bends and dry roads, earlier in the week.! On our day it was slightly damp and very misty, I swear with the 80GS small screen the mist sticks to the visor.(taller screen anybody). They coped well with us, the “Damp Dozen” considering they forgot to note we were coming. The Diary of Events is, as I write this, at Swanley Printers, sent to The Journal and on our “southeastbmw.com” Website. The Borders and Sunday Lunchtime meets included in the 2012 Diary are those with favourable feedback with good support. The 7 Diner/Hotel, suggested by a local member has been added as a Borders meeting. The “Theme Nights” are aiming to provoke some interest in what we can offer to all BMW riders. Rother Valley Camping at Northiam is not far but has some beautiful scenery and interesting roads, a newly open pub/Indian Restaurant at its gates and an exceptionally nice pub and food a few minutes walk away. This has been set up by John Burton and we hope to entice some other sections to join us. ( Also there with the CSMA on 5-9th July) “Red Kite” Camping and B&B weekend is a joint “do” with the Western Section and Kelvin and Paula have worked overtime to get this set up. Phil`s British Superbike weekend run may provoke some interest for some and is a new idea. We hope you all got your just rewards for Christmas, indigestion, a little hangover and all the gifts you hoped for , cleaning kits, comfy seats, “do it all spanners” and blenders ? ( which can be used for mixing that paint with some thinners to touch up the old frame) Good Luck, Good Health and Keep it between the Green Bits.
October 2011
Writing the notes for Decembers Journal on a warm October evening It doesn’t seem possible that 2011 is nearly over. A few of us in the SE Section will say hurray and lets hope 2012 will be a better year. Too many crashes, falls and fires for one year. In October we held our AGM, which was a lively affair. The years previous minutes were read agreed and seconded and we have a bit of money in the kitty. We managed to coerce Kelvin and Paula Duff on to the committee and look forward to their input, I am sure that they will be a great asset to the committee. Thank you to you both. We discussed the way the diary worked out last year and what needs to be altered, but on the whole the section seemed pleased with the various events and rides out. We are open to any suggestions from members for new events or runs out. Thanks Rosemary for that. I hope we can build on last years successes. We say goodbye to our Webmaster Dave Witts who has patiently put on all we have sent him and should be thanked for the work involved. Feedback has been positive but now we need to confirm replacement. Phil took my oft changed Sheffield Park run, voted to go elsewhere due to £10 entry to those non Nat Trust members. George took us to the Beach at Weymouth for the races there and apart for a cold start it ended as a long but enjoyable day. The pace was firm to good you could say. The Photo competition was won by, Colin Hartridge (scenic) Dave Deacon (humour) Ian Bryan (bike action) There were some excellent pictures but with not a large entry , we awarded, by members vote, only the winners. They will receive huge and valuable prizes later in the year. Grahams run to Brogdale Farm sounded very interesting and enjoyed by all, pity I missed it due to attending the Nat.Secretaries meeting. Lunchtime meet at Hawkhurst Fish Farm had 14 of us snacking ( I had a nice roast too) then following Tim and Sarah to The Smugglers, shut! on the only day this year we are told so we ended up at Rye. The Morris`s, Ron and myself attended the Kings Arms Biggin Hill (Ron recommends the food) and found it as a good Borders venue. We had our section committee meeting last night (31st Oct) and are planning the 2012 Diary with old and hopefully new favorites, nice to see Kelvin planning a Brecon weekend in June for campers and B&B,ers We will keep the mixed format of Borders and Lunchtime meets keeping the best venues as these have done better than I hoped. If you are reading this on our website, book your Xmas Dinner at Poultwood Golf Club now and if you are reading this in Decembers Journal you may be lucky if you call Rosemary and send her lots of money.01622 678997 We would like numbers for New Years Party on 7th January to book buffet, We are planning a “quiet Disco” with early start for food to allow a little jigging/smooching and time for chatting, again, at Poultwood. Apologies for writing this a bit quick like but have to get tent etc ready for an early start to the Hippo.

Late News -For Harvest Supper Photos Click Here

Well wasn't that a busy month, Lou and Rosemary are getting their garage usable again and having a much needed holiday and I have been building a fleet of bikes (R80GS & R1150RT) on the basis that with so many of us having”miss-haps” spares may be handy. I have lots of work on now as I have the 30th Anniversary GS back to rebuild. Apologies for omission of picture,“donation to Hospice”in September Journal but this and many others can be seen on our section website
Thanks go to John Smith and Dave Deacons team for organising our display and erecting our marquis for an enjoyable day at the VMCC Rally at The Friars. We displayed 10 bikes and thanks also to Jill and Roger for manning the “teapot”. From Coopers, Ron led us on a merry dance around the lanes of West Sussex to Beachy Head, where we enjoyed huge Fish and Chips, an enjoyable run if a little split up on occasion, Ron should be accumulating bonus points for Man of the Year! I dropped in to The Roebuck for their meet where we always get a warm welcome, with reserved table. It was good to see Bridget back after a while. One of our few lady riders. Mick had meticulously planned his run to Boughton on the Water. Fine, but for the London Cycle Race also being just as meticulously planned to cut off some of our route. We had about 15 members who enjoyed the destination though, and the weather was kind, so thanks Mick for the hard work.

Johns Coastal run. Another good turnout for a well organised run to The Smugglers Rest Gala Day, they also saw some practice launches by the RNLI, classic car display and Paula had a paddle.
The Snetterton Track Day was held in some lovely sunshine with a warm, dry track. Last year we only managed Alan Thomas as an entry and this year only I was “fit” enough to wobble round. Robert Bensley had organised a stunning days enjoyment with an emphasis on safe participation which worked well for most. After a few runs on my R1150RT, BMW kindly let me loose for the afternoon on their S100RR and K1300S, which I can highly recommend you experience as an alternative to Bungee Jumping.

The National at Moreton-in-the-Marsh was a success with a very good attendance from our section who enjoyed the different activities put on for our enjoyment. ( In the practice area I managed to fall off the Trial bike supplied for the skills course, trying to get the wheel up was beyond me so I went round the big log instead of over it. )

The Borders meet at The Plough near Herne Bay had ten people, so a good turnout with some from the Dartford area joining the local members. It was a nice evening for a ride too. COMING UP John Burton has booked another weekend at Rother Valley Camp-site Northiam from 23rd September. Not too late if you are reading this on our website, southeastbmw.com Runs, please note swapped dates, Sheffield Park now 2nd.and Brogdale Farm 23rd to coincide with their Cider Festival. Well if you hav`nt put forward alternatives for “us, your obedient servants” you may be stuck with “us”for another term. See you at our AGM on 5th October at 8.30 pm. Please come with some positive ideas.

OBITUARY
I am sorry to relate the passing of Peter Merrifield, a member of the South East Section for many years. He was a regular at our Ringmer area meetings for some time. Only recently although obviously frail he came to another old friends funeral and was warmly welcomed. Peter rode with us to Thatch Rallies in Ireland and to Oirschot Rallies and Germany on his R1100RS, he was a skilled and accomplished rider and also became involved in Rider Training. He retired from his business some 15 years ago and fought against some serious back injuries and operations which made it difficult for him to change gear, so he had his R100GS converted to pneumatic gear-change, only in his latter years being unable to ride. His service was in Brighton to a packed house with many Bikes being ridden there. His chosen charity is The Scuba Trust.who take disabled people Diving. He enjoyed his last 2 holidays with them. Donations to. Bowley Funeral Services.30 Keymer Road Hassocks Sussex BN6 8AN or to South East Section Secretary

August 2011
Well summer moves on and the July club night was busy starting with John Hawkers general knowledge quiz, lots of brain teasing for all. Thank you for setting such a good quiz John. Top boy was Ian Campbell and Top girl was yours truly. Club nights are very busy with plenty of time to catch up with friends and sink a pint or coffee or tea.
The weather for the BBQ at Matty’s was showers, but apart from a shower at lunchtime we had a sunny afternoon and dry evening. I cannot thank the volunteers enough for all their support and help, without them there would be no BBQ. Graham on the coals, Dave Deacon and his team setting up the marquee and meat shopping, building “burners” and also he made the BBQ for Graham to cook on, Brenda for all the salads and breads and cheeses, Sarah for the plant quiz and badminton net. Matty, of course for his hospitality and use of his land, also the local school for all the games, which the fitter members enjoyed playing including Boule, and Cricket. I think everyone enjoyed the food and the new venue. Thanks Rosemary for the above.

This month George Barlow, Mick Foxwell and myself took £350 to St.Peters & St.James Hospice, where Margaret Barlow was so happy to go once a week. This was collected by club members and as the picture shows we expressed thanks for all they do as a Hospice and they were very grateful for this.
Rods run to Weald and Downland Museum had a very good turnout and had good reports although no details available. The Hawk again was lucky with weather and a very good turnout of eleven bikes for a well planned run to The Museum of Power at Langford. Coopers “run” was lead by Alan and Linda with nine bikes including a welcome to new member, Piers. The Rother Valley CSMA/BMW Clubs camping was enjoyed by John Burton,Rod,Ian and me(Shaun).A lovely sunny Friday and crud weather Saturday for an intricately planned run. Nice breakfast stop though. Thanks John for setting up and it was nice to meet the CSMA riders. Thanks go to Alan and Linda, who took the F&C run as Wendy is recovering from op. (get well soon) I am not aware of anyone attending the Dog and Duck (holidays etc?) and offer my apologies. Beech Court Gardens I spied, (they know who they are), eating a nice looking Sunday lunch, then to be collected by Dave D. standing in for Kevin, unable to ride due to a strain (again, get well soon), to ride to Kevin & Denise`s for tea & cakes. Again my apologies as I was selling a Go Kart to make way for another bike. And now to the event of the year. The Best Bike. We decided to have different categories as follows. Best Classic, more than 25 years old went to John Smiths R90s. 2nd. Dave Cooks R100T. Best “Modern” less than 2 years old to Tim & Sarah's R1200RT. 2nd. Bill Hallers R80GS “Of Technical Interest” went to an old Boxer held together with Gaffer tape and Bungees with 181000 miles on it. Mine ! Dick from the VOC/VMCC Club did the judging with good taste I must say. Thank you to all who polished some beautiful machines and well done to the deserving recipients.
Coming Up A reminder that the harvest supper will be at Matty’s field on 3rd September., names to Rosemary as soon as possible on 01622 678997.
11th Tony takes us with RHDR, Train, F&C lunch, Historical vehicle Rally at New Romney Station, at £16.80 and hoping for discount, so he needs names.
18th Ron leads us to A Rural Life Centre Classic Vehicle Gathering
Please note “Borders” 30th now Dog & Duck not Manston. / 28th October not Knights but Kings Arms Leaves Green Road Biggin Hill BR26DU. (please, no more changes)
25th September. 09.45. MAG is doing an anti tampering/compulsory Yellow Vest rally from Strood B&Q.
We are all in it together and some may feel these things should be made compulsory by the EU. Don't let the “Bureaucrats” grind you down.
AGM for our section will be 5th October at 8.30 pm at The Bull, please send nominations for offices to me prior to this.

July 2011
The SE Section has not had a good month with Shaun and his GS parting company on a round about thanks to blue van man in the left hand lane deciding to go right and cut across him. Shaun was very lucky to come out of the accident with 5 broken ribs and bruises. We all wish him a speedy recovery; last update was he eventually sat still for a week to allow the ribs to start to heal. The following Thursday I injured my knee in the gym and ended up on crutches, I am mending slowly, I have today ditched the crutches (4 July).
That same Thursday night was dust bin day for recyclables and some little darling set fire to bin and garage containing two bikes (BWM and Suzuki) all summer and winter bike gear and helmets. Lou tried to get the burning bins out of the way which resulted in burnt hands. So we are a sorry pair, fortunately the bikes were not damaged, which cannot be said for the rest of the contents, so not much biking on our part, or Shaun’s of late.
Runs still going with good turnouts. Coopers meet always well attended and thanks to Ron this month for taking us to Newhaven. Paul Ashbys T&Cakes run to M.I.Laws received good feedback and thanks for the preparation .

Over to Shaun to have his say.
Well, what can I say, except thanks for the calls, concern and grapes and I hope Lou and Rose get sorted soon. After two days in the West Kent, the Staff Nurse looked surprised when I said “I am out of here tomorrow” I am grateful for a good witness and blue van man admits liability. Now to squabble over compensation. I want my (written off ) GS back!! I am sure my old Boxer gave a little snigger when I sat on it.
Now for something a little different. Congrats to George Barlow and his R100RS completing its 100k miles, he really is an example to us all. John Smiths run to Classic meet at Eastbourne was enjoyed by 11 bikes, we met the odd shower but saw some lovely old bikes there. We lost one Triumph on the way and John lost us all in Rye, my fault for going to the Loo when John explained the return route. Thanks to Chris for leading us back from there.
The Derby Dales w/e was enjoyed by a small group, we had hail Friday evening and some heavy showers on the moors Saturday but fortunately it was dry most of the time. Colin Blisset lead a very well planned run with stunning scenery and excellent lunchstop choice. We even did a little “Cat & Fiddle”. Thanks to Sheila and Colin for arranging a superb weekend .
I didn't get round to asking why Coopers cancelled their Open Day as I did not arrive due to blue van man. By now you should have booked with John to display at WK.VMCC. International Rally on the 7th Our National Rally from 26th August. I will be leaving Thurrock Fuel Services at 10am. We did not book a Lunchtime meet for 28th as we didn't want a date clash. Also the Borders meet is on a Wednesday that week for the same reasons. Now you need to book in with Rosemary for Matties Harvest Supper on 3rd September.

June 2011
The runs for June have been well attended and some different places visited. The Fish and Chip Run was lead by Dave Deacon 15 bikes and lots more met at venue. The fish and chips was good as usual, most got home before the rain came. John Smith, Kelvin and Paula Duff attended The Ace Café meet 8 June. Kelvin and Paula had not been to the Café before and had a good time soaking up the atmosphere. Kelvin and Paula’s run to West Stow Anglo Saxon village was a lovely 200 miles through all the Essex and Suffolk villages, after lunch we had tea at Tiptree, Wilkinsons jam making factory where more cake was consumed. Thanks to Kelvin and Paula for a Sunday to remember.
The Sunday met at Pole Hill had 14 bikes attending, many with “Pillion” then a run was led by Tim Oliver to an old favourite haunt, Headcorn Aerodrome for tea and cakes.
Colin and Sheila’s Derby Camping Weekend is 10th/12th June. Please let me or Shaun know if you want to go. Lots of interest already, Colin has arranged ride outs and there are plenty of places to visit close by.
Do not forget the BBQ at Matty’s on 9 July if you need a ticket please ring me on 01622 678997. The address and postcode for the venue is 153 Branbridges Road East Peckham TN12 6QQ. If you can help with the event i.e., helping with setting up or lending a hand please also let me know. My mobile on the day is 07919 972366 or Shaun’s mobile is 07752 622890
Thanks Rose, not much to add except we have noted May choice for Borders “did not meet our requirements”hence the group there went down the road, at least one person turned up to find them gone! Apologies to Keith and Debbie and any others.(Nb. Rose or Shauns mobiles, use for info. Then we can let you know what's happening.)
Borders Meets, due to not being open/?food, we need to decide on venues for 31stAugust, 30th Sept and 28th Oct so any suggestions? Coming Soon, lots going on but I note:- Rods Run to Weald and Downland Museum is 3rd July (erroneously noted earlier this year) Cadwell Trackday 8th July. At least two of us are joining Bob Bensley who has organised this. Now is it the old Boxer or the GS? Should be a more relaxed day than your average trackday.
Our Camping meet with The CSMA on 15th July at Rother Valley Camping is £10 pitch/£3.pp .( call Rose or Shaun to book) I have been trying to get my head round setting up a Section Photo Album facility on our Website.
I hope by next month we can send link from members so we can store and view club pictures. We have pics as part of the on-line Section News but would like to see this as additional. Nothing is certain, don't take for granted when you put your foot down its gonna hold the bike up.
May 2011

The sun has blessed us through April and excluding camping, our activities have been well supported. At the AGM. Brian and Margaret, (collecting the Max Deubal and Mary Dudgeon awards in recognition of their service to the club.) Mick,John and myself (Shaun) also attending and voting with gusto on your behalf, the latter three enjoying the bar, bands and facilities at The Rowing Club where camping was arranged. We all got together on the Saturday evening and enjoyed reminiscences from a retired member of the Durham Constabulary, including bikes and cars . I also received on behalf of George Barlow the Bill Wooding ( Yorkie Bill ) “Spirit of BMW” award which recognizes the many miles of enthusiastic biking and participation in club activities, (many with wife, Margaret without whose support I am sure he would say would not have been possible ) Poignant that George and Bill were such good friends.

I was honoured to pass this to him on our clubnight.

Oirschot Easter Rally and again we won The Grootste Club award with most attending! What a good time we had meeting old friends, eating and drinking far too much. The Oirschot BMW Club celebrated their 40 anniversary with a bunkhouse camping weekend. On the Saturday evening the band that played after the meal, was the band that played for the club in their first year. The band came all the way from Northern Ireland and by the time they had paid their fare courtesy of Ryan Air they were out of pocket, but they enjoyed playing again for the club and did not mind about not making any money. Included in the weekend was a ride out on Sunday to a Motto Guzzi museum, which appeared be a house with the ground floor full of bikes, along with a bar full of drinks. Very much a bloke’s idea of heaven, obviously not a woman in residence (dream on boys)
As they celebrated their 40th year we celebrated our 20th attendance so our committee agreed we should present them with a gift. An original painting of an Oast house,(the one near Headcorn aerodrome) and they seemed very pleased. The band was great, food you would not believe, the Run well organised and when I put in earplugs I could not even hear myself, or Brenda snore in the bunkhouse. They are a small (80 members) club and the work they put in and the low cost is amazing, we really do owe them one over here.

The Oirschot BMW Club Rally 2011

Our Borders and Sunday Lunchtime meets are well attended with some new or rare faces turning up. Apologies are due as I hear The Mayfly was very noisy (Royal Weddings and Birthday party there!) and Disaster occurred when Highgrove on 24th was shut. We will have to plan around Bank Holidays better.
By the time you read this the Garden of England camping will have been canceled as too little interest and we will be booked for Derby Dales 10th to 12th June, hopefully with more success. Leave Thurrock Services 09.30.Fri.10th.
Bookings for BBQ at Matties need to be to Rose ASAP for 9th July. plus £5 of course 20 April at the Bull should have been our quiz night, but only 17 members attended and John Hawker has put a lot of effort into compiling the questions.A decision was made to run the quiz on club night later on in the year. A thank you to John for all his hard work and we look forward to taking part in the quiz soon.
24 April and lunch time at Highgrove near Staplehurst was attended by 6 members, unfortunately as it was a bank holiday the centre was closed, Cliff Cakebread lead away to the Coastguard café at Fairlight near Hastings for a spot of light refreshments. Thank you Cliff for saving the day.
29 April Borders meeting at the Mayfly pub .9 members had a meal not really up to scratch so perhaps we will give that one a miss. Don’t forget the Derby Dales Camping weekend 10/12th June if you want to go let any of the committee know.
Camping weekend 15 July please let Ian Campbell know if you are going (0208 693 0329) the site is Rother Valley Caravan Camping Park Station Road Northiam East Sussex TN31 6QT
Do not miss th.e free BBQ at Coopers on 18th June.
Addresses for Borders and Sunday Lunchtime meets are:- Chestfield Barn 101 Chestfield Road. Chestfield CT53LU Hawkhurst Fish Farm Lakeside Cafe. Hastings Road TN184RT.
Just had to have a new rear Tourance on my 2010 GS. At 7000 miles not such good wear from the ESP version fitted from new, as the earlier single compound tyre. We will see what that does . The fitter told me still having the ESP on the front would affect the handling. Didn't notice any though.
On a sad note,we received the news that Brian Dees passed away on 30th April. A long standing member of our section. Brian Shears a close friend has written an obituary

April2011

Margaret Barlow.

The South East Section lost one of our dearest and most respected members on the 21st March.
Margaret, or Marg. To her friends, had been a member some twenty six years and participated in all club activities until the last couple of years when illness restricted what she could attend, although she continued to be a welcome figure at the BBQs Meals and Parties. As pillion, Marg. accompanied George for many thousands of miles on holidays throughout Europe, particularly enjoying the mountain passes. Together they would be out on club runs and rallies, often camping and bunk housing. She enjoyed mixing in with everybody. Marg. rode into her seventies and when unable to ride continued to attend club nights and functions being a frequent Quiz night winner, one of her many skills. Also being one of the key people helping at BBQs and events.
She was in charge of the Accounts/Cashier departments of S.E.Water before she retired. When she found it more difficult to get out, people knew they would be welcome to drop in and when the Girls in The BMW club had the weekends there as the Men went to Hippos and Rhinos they had a great time. Marg. always had a smile for you and would have an interesting conversation about most things, she enjoyed life and seemed to get a lot out of it, laughing and enjoying a joke to the end.
Our thoughts are particularly with George who cared for Marg. throughout her illness, a distressing time for him, having known Marg.for almost 70 years and being married 60 of them. She was fortunate to have the family including two daughters, three grandsons and George close by when, after a brave and dogged fight she succumbed to Pulmonary Fibrosis .
Marg was 81 on 9th February and was amused when out on a club run that day we sang happy birthday down the phone to her. She was the sort of person you wanted to do that for.
Shaun.

SE Section news for April 2011

It is with a heavy heart we acknowledge the passing of  Margaret Barlow on 21st March, a member of some 26 years who , with George travelled all the way from Haywards Heath to our Wednesday meetings for most of these years, recently enjoying our BBQs and Christmas and New Year Parties.
She has been a popular member member of our club and will be sorely missed. Our thoughts are with the family and particularly George who supported her through recent years.
Margaret's funeral took place on 6th April, a lovely sunny day. Members bikes formed part of the cortège and there was a large congregation including many members and friends from The BMW Club. Brian Shears read a eulogy on behalf of the section.
Paula Duff is collecting donations ( or send to Secretary) to go to St. Peters & St. James Hospice at Haywards Heath.
Margaret's Obituary appears in this Journal.
This month we also celebrated birthdays for Paul Ashby (50) and Keith (60). Many members attended their parties and enjoyed the food, drink and dancing.

We can now confirm the winners of Guess the Pic.competition, and suitably awarded, were Tony and Ian, both getting 17 of 30 correct.
6 March  Sunday run lead by Dave Deacon was scheduled for the Greenwich Observatory, but a hitch in the amount of parking available lead to a change and the run was 90 miles to a warm pub The George in Shalmsford Street Chartham with 16 bikes and 21 members very grateful for a warm pub and a hot meal on a cold day. A few brave souls then went on to the old favourite for a hot toddy at the Headcorn air field. Well done Dave for a good day out.

9 March the Wednesday from Cooper had Darryl lead 14 of us for a very good ride and lunch.

11 March the Roebuck and the usual small group met with the addition of a new face, apologies to as the name is not noted but hope to see you again.

16 March Club night and a chance to chat, lots of friends to catch up with and one or two new faces.

20 March East Kent run and Shaun lead the run out on a beautiful sunny warm day to the Dog and Duck at Plucks Gutter. 23 members had a 114 mile ride through the Kent countryside which was looking at its best in the sunshine. After a hearty lunch some of the more adventurous indulged in a pudding called lumpy bumpy, a chocolate creation. After lunch a swift ride to Head Aerodrome (can you see a pattern here?) for tea and cake). Thank you Shaun for a good ride out.

22 March some of the committee met at Matty’s to size up the venue for the section BBQ. Matty’s land will be a fantastic venue and we hope that lots of you will come along, still thinking of activities for the event, but it will be a good party. More details to follow.( Note date change)

25 March a Borders meeting at Herne Bay at the Plough. The Plough has recently changed hands and unfortunately there was no food available, but 9 members enjoyed a social evening local to them.

27 March Sunday meeting at Hadlow College café, then an impromptu ride out lead by Tim Oliver to Fairlight Country Park Near Hasting and tea and cakes at the coast guard tea rooms. Thank Tim for a good ride out.

3 April Ron Rugman’s run to Littlehampton and once again a good turnout . 24 members set off from the Duck Pound at Godstone for a 180 mile run stopping off at Littlehampton Marina for lunch then on to the llama farm for afternoon tea. Thank you Ron.

Changes to Diary./ Coming Up
8th May is BMW day at The Ace. Owing to the problems leading a large group it is suggested small groups organise themselves to meet there through the day.
20th May. “Garden of England Camping” has been planned for Marlie Farm New Romney but writing this we need an influx of recruits to make a success.
27th May The Borders is now at The Fox and Hounds nr Biggin Hill .TN162EB. Off A233.
29th May. Lunchtime meet at Pole hill London Road Badgers Mount TN147AD. Nb. Run will be Ad Hoc as Pauls run will now be 26th June from Hawkhurst.
18th June Coopers BMW have an Open Day/BBQ  so our BBQ at Matties  is rescheduled for 9th July when I am told the weather will be warmer for the campers who should note we are hiring special WCs. ( “special”=with seats and doors)

March2011
Coopers meet 9th Feb. and Kevan was cajoled to the front of the pack to lead 9 bikes, including one pillion, Linda, to Lydd Airport where they served some good meals and snacks. Then we met George Barlow and R100RS at Ogris/Wessons. Thanks Kevan. The Roebuck on 11th.found only John B. Ian, Rod and myself (Shaun who had a damp ride down on the old Boxer). We enjoyed the meal! On the16th.
The social committee held a meeting before the club night and discussed the camping weekend which Graham Ashmore is sorting so any volunteers for runs or assistance please speak to him. We also discussed the BBQ in June, any offers to help on the day please speak to Rosemary Warner. Later we were entertained by a friend of Dave Ds, Terry Ayears, who worked at Shephard and Neame Brewery as an engineer. The talk firstly was about the history of the brewery and the role played and then moved on to stories of life at the brewery. A good, varied and amusing evening
The Rhino. Eight of us camped it up in Snowdonia, including Harry and Andy from Isle of Wight who no doubt found it colder than their usually tropical Island. It was nice to meet Barry again who moved to Manchester from our Section. Some of us walked down rivers (with Keith from Yorks.Sec.) some followed Rhys and walked up mountains, some found our own way. Others actually went for a ride. We also did the usual browsing in the Gelert Shop for bargains where the helpful lady explained how I should reproof my leaking Berghaus. It only rained on the walk back from the pub, tee hee ses me as I put on my overtrousers, the only one to take any, then to get wet through the jacket!! The Sat.evening we had excellent R&R band “Cat Scratch Fever”( Thanks BMW Club) With free hot drinks and bacon rolls on site its not to be missed.

Mick, Keith and Shaun walked down river   The R&R Band warmed us up at The Rhino

Clive & Barry met us after their walk with Rhys.
He tried blowing away the keyboard

Mick, John and  Harry prepare for home.
He tried to blow us all away.

Ian and Rod protected their breakfast with fierce determination. (Shaun was hovering pretending to take pics.)
Did hand stands on the keyboards!

We nearly lost Clive in the Mountains.
  We remained unmoved

Exhausted, he collapsed and was carried out

The Borders meet at The Dog and Duck was a success seeing local lads Dave Mawson, returning after nearly 20 years and Richard Filipczak being able to get to an evening meet. On Sunday 27 February our Sunday lunchtime meeting was at Brookside Garden Centre East Peckham, near Tonbridge. This meeting was a success with around 20 members attending. Followed by two optional ride outs with Colin and Sheila Blisset coming all the way from Derby for both meets. (Condolences were offered to Rogers battery and thanks to Mattie for the jump leads. We could not bump start Rogers big GS, has anybody ever done this? it would be nice to know the trick.)
Club night 2nd March and it was guess the object from the photo. Lou presented a devious quiz with lots of everyday objects photographed from obscure angles. The quiz was a success. The winner to be announced on the 16th. The Kent Air Ambulance Trust sent us a Thank You letter for the £160 we collected by not giving each other Xmas cards and some who met at Coombe Martin in January. Shaun attended the Secretaries Meeting 26th February and put forward our proposal that Margaret and Brian should receive Lifetime Honorary Membership. This was agreed and is thoroughly deserved and will be an excuse to have some nice cakes.
We also volunteered to do the 2014 Nat.Rally. I know you say never volunteer. So now we want willing enthusiasts to form a working party and possibly a joint venture with the Southern Section.

Note for your diary. 8th July and 22nd August when we will be joining Bob Bensley on his track days at Cadwell and Snetterton. I find it odd writing news for a month that is read two months later, our website news which is actually posted as soon as written is useful for those on Internet (www.southeastbmw.com) Some shocking/ly good pics on it but how about some articles/pics from members?
COMING UP Paul Devall has asked we let people know he has taken on The Mileage Competition( so snap your clocks and send to him to register) He is arranging Pet Food Run on 22nd May to The Last Chance at Edenbridge, maybe this could be run option from our G.O.E.Camping weekend? He is leading this from the M20/A20 Maidstone Services at 11.am. Contact. 07826 854375/07092 263119

We should be planning to go to the National AGM. 15th/17th.April. Camping and Caravans, including Sticky Toffee Pud. I went last year, it was fun. Book through Journal. ( Leave Thurrock Services 09.30. Fri.15th)
The Sunday Lunchtime meet 24th is at Highgrove Garden Centre.Staplehurst Rd Marden. TN129BT The “Borders”29th. 7.30 pm, at The Mayfly Hawkinge. Spitfire Way.CT187FE See you there.

Jan 2010

January kicked off SE section with Club night at the Bull East Farleigh, a chance to catch up with friends after Christmas 8 January our New Years party held at the Poult Wood Golf Centre near to Tonbridge, about 45 members enjoyed a scrumptious buffet and a chance to meet old friends and members. Music this time was agreed to be more background than a full blown disco, which according to most comments was OK, perhaps we need to consider this form of entertainment, we can have a chat or loud music but it seems not both. Presentations were for Best Bike (recipients noted in previous “news” and pictures can be viewed on our website.) 14 January was the meet at the Roebuck with members attending, some local and some from afar.(One lunatic arrived on their “old hack”and received little sympathy from those who drove!) 19 January was club night at the Bull East Farleigh a good turn out on a miserable night with one or two on bikes, well done for turning out. 28 January was the first of our Friday night borders meeting with Ken and Wendy Hall’s local the Chestfield Barn Inn, near Whitstable. A good turn out of 12 members for this far flung venue, even Ron Rugman on his bike, well done Ron on a cold dreary night (heated jacket was working well). We will be meeting at the Barn again in the evening of 24 June. It will be good to see the lovely venue in day light with its own pond and pub garden. 30 January Sunday lunch time meet at the White Horse Chilham another new venue, and a good turn out with twelve members tucking into a heart Sunday roast. Looks like this was popular venue.(It was nice to see Dickie Brooks up from Dover on his R100RS to his first meeting. On to the 2 February and club night with a beetle drive 28 members took part in a noisy game with lots of shouts and laughs. The game was well and truly won by Allan Thomas who scored 72 points; Allan won a bottle of Asti and lots of heckling. (Thanks to Rosemary for the above.)

If you have access to Internet you can see we have been busy updating our website. I hope you will agree the S.E.Section Website is more informative and interesting.(with a few bargains for sale) It will be nice to see some articles on it, what do you have ? I know there are many members who have not used this but hope it will be useful to those who do find there way into it. I have to thank our webmaster, Dave Witts for pushing the right buttons and putting up with my attempts to get stuff to him. I also thank Wendy Hall for sorting the “Borders” and Sunday Lunchtime addresses which Dave has added to the Venues/Diary page, these with the specific websites make finding them easy. Swanley Press have done their usual good job and printed our Diaries, I thank Mick Foxwell for collecting them, delivering to the sorting house (fighting home through the snow) and George Barlow for collecting the excess ones for us. The section logo was agreed after a lot of work by Ian Campbell and again, Dave. I must give acknowledgement to the fine picture on the front of our diary to an Ulster section member. I am told it was either Richard or Norman Herron. Since leaving out adverts for Riverview Garage and Sidcup Tyres to make room for our extra events I have received feedback from members in favour of these companies who will be keen no doubt to know we still support them. Gravesham Trophies were very helpful, gave us a very reasonable rate and supplied some very nice trophies which I handed out at the New Year Party, the recipients were noted in previous news. Brian Shears on behalf of the previous committee presented Elaine Bronger with a huge bouquet in appreciation of the work she has done for us as Treasurer over many years,to great approval from the members present. The pics of award winners at the Xmas party were by Tony Jefford and the New Year party awards by Dave Deacon, pics are on our website.. Coopers BMW saw Ron lead off with Darryl and myself following to Ogri`s cafe, Horam where we met George for lunch. A useful remark made me think it will be a good idea to add info re. Borders and Lunchtime meets to Journal Section News. So here goes. “The Plough” 36 Margate Rd Broomfield / “Hadlow College” Tonbridge Rd Hadlow.
Looking forward to seeing you there./ Shaun/Lou/Rose

Dec 2010
Hi everybody when you read this missive Christmas will be well and truly past and we shall be trying to keep those New Year Resolutions.   South East Section Christmas Lunch was on 12 December, which as it turned out was a clear weather window in a very snowy December so well done to Brian and Margaret who booked the date and venue in December 2009.
The lunch was very good as usual with 61 members enjoying a hot festive meal. A presentation of an engraved Waterford Crystal picture frame was made to Brian and Margaret Shears for 15 years of  hard work for the section .  Margaret was also given a basket of flowers.  Debbie and Keith Morris received two crystal glass tumblers and Debbie a basket of flowers for work in the section as Social Secretary and Brenda Gibson was presented with a basket of flowers for doing the raffle every club night.
Other presentations were  made by Brian Shears to Paula Duff who received  a medal which was for Ladies first place in the SE Section Olympic  Games which took place in August. Club man of the year was Ron Rugman who was presented with a lovely engraved clock mounted in a glass frame,  runner up  was shared by Mick Foxwell and Phil Jones. Club woman of the year was Brenda Gibson who received glasses and Rosemary Warner runner up, who received a glass clock as well.
The rest of the day was spent chatting and catching up with old friends.  A good time was had by all.
On Friday the 11 December there was a meet at The Roebuck at Laughton which 8 members attended.
Club night on the 15 December at the Bull East Farleigh was a relaxed evening, everyone had a chance to chat and wind down ready for Christmas.  Minces and nibbles were served and enjoyed by everyone.
Just a note to say that Andrew Ayriss who was our guest speaker in October  and was accompanied by his very pregnant wife  Elaine,  gave birth to a daughter on the 12 December. Congratulations to them and their new baby.
We have put on our website the addresses for Sunday lunchtime and “Borders” venues.
Alternatively you can ring one of us. It will be nice to see new faces at these “new” meets.
We are in the process of confirming details of our camping w/ends and will broadcast these asap.

Nov 2010

Club night November 3 was guest speaker night Andrew who enthralled us with a talk on his trip to Thai land along with a slide show to illustrate the journey.   He took us to a different world away from the winter gloom of England.
Kevin Goldfinch kicked off the runs for November with his Autumn Leaves ride out. A good turnout of riders took part as he lead the way through the autumn colours ending up for lunch at The Star, Pevensey an old but favourite stop.
The Midweek run from Coopers was organised and led by Alan and Linda Thomas which was enjoyed by all. It is nice to see them both back in the thick of it. Next run led by Roger Bickerstaff, was not for the faint hearted the day started not too bad but dissolved in a very wet ride to Hastings for a fish and chip lunch, and an even wetter ride home. Well done to the brave riders who all deserve a medal for turning out for a very wet ride.
We are planning the New Years party on 8 January 2011 at 7.30.pm til late  which will be once again at the Poult Wood Golf Centre near Tonbridge.  Please let me know if you intend coming as we need to order the  buffet. It has been decided, as we will not book a Disco etc there will be no charge for this. We intend to have the first half of the evening for meeting and chatting, eating and of course the presentations, and then we will have some music and dancing at about 9.30pm, so if the music is not your scene please come along for the food and chat. Looking forward to next years diary of events there are some old favorites and some new ideas, let the committee know your thoughts and suggestion, it is your club and we would welcome any comments.
Thanks to Rosemary and Lou for this write-up.
Social Secretary Lou Warner 01622 678997. southeast.social@bmwclub.org.uk

I am grateful to Ian Campbell for standing in at the N.C.Meeting 20th/21st for us and am sure he will be pleased to relay info at the next clubnight. If the snow holds out and printing of the Diary goes according to plan you will soon see we have expanded on our activities. The committee have been very busy. eg. For a variety of reasons Lunch at The Bull is not supported so you will see different venues which do not necessitate Sunday Roast, with an ad-hoc run after.  We have also introduced venues nearer our “Borders” to encourage those on the outskirts of our section. We plan to have a committee member at each of these so hope for some new faces. I have to apologise To The Roebuck Regulars for my absence again but the weather and my cold put paid to plans to get there. I plan to make the 10th.
The Bull Clubnight was snowed off so final plans for New Year and Donations to Air Ambulance in lieu of Xmas cards will be done on 12th and 15th.Dec. By the time you read this Christmas will be a passing memory still hanging around your waist!.
Best Wishes from myself,  Brenda and your Committee to all our readers, near and far and I hope you had a Happy Christmas and wish you a Happy New Year. (and keep it between the green bits)

Nov 2010

The Section AGM saw many changes to the structure of our committee.
Brian Shears, our Secretary for 16 years stood down. We all wished him and his right hand lady, Margaret a huge thank you for all their hard work, help and advice they gave over these years. We hope they will have a more relaxing time enjoying the club activities and events.
The Social Secretary, Keith Morris stood down along with Roger Bickerstaff from the Social Committee and again we thank them and their right hand ladies, Debbie and Jill for all their efforts and look forward to seeing them at the club.
The new Secretary is Shaun Mulligan with Lou Warner Social Secretary. Elaine continues as Treasurer.
The Social Committee now is Graham Ashmore . George Barlow.  Ian  Campbell.  Dave Deacon . John  Smith and Rosemary Warner. Dave Witts is looking after the website and John Hawker has offered to deal with Membership applications.
This committee has met and agreed to continue many of the events as well as introducing new ones. Perhaps a ride out for older more cherished Beamers, a more sedate ride, sit back and enjoy the scenery.
Any ideas for any events please speak to one of the committee and we can consider it for the Diary of Events.
Ian’s camping w/e in The New Forest was a success with good weather and Lou lead a ride on Saturday through The Forest. A good weekend for all.
George took 6 to Weymouth Beach Races with tea on the Prom. And for the Wednesday run, Ron took us to Beachy Head.
On the 17th Rod took us to Norman’s Bay via “the pretty route” and very pretty it was too.
The Photo competition had fewer entries although still of the same high quality.
Winners were. Scenic-Ken Hall. Humorous-Graham Ashmore . Action-Chris Coffill. Bike-Shaun Mulligan.
The members present voted for these and awards will be given at the New Year Party on 8th January.
A note about the Christmas Lunch on 12th December at Poultwood Golf Club, menu choices will be available at club night 3rd November.(and hopefully Shaun will put on our Section Forum). Do let me know in good time.
Signed off my first section report
Lou Warner.Soc Sec.01622 678997./southeast.social@bmwclub.org.uk

As new Secretary I thought I should add a bit on the end.
It is difficult to adequately show our respect and gratitude to somebody who has led our section for 16 years; Brian and Margaret have worked tirelessly to run the section over this time even though their health has given them some real challenges. I hope our round of applause for them at the AGM went some way to showing this.
I think with the people added to the committee we have a variety of characters and together we intend building on what we have and will offer something for each member. Please tell us if we are failing.
I see our section forum is used hardly at all, although this cannot replace our Journal, can we use it for discussing topics of interest, passing on information etc.  We will also look to update our website. What would you like to see on it. ?
