Some of you eagle eyed readers of this column may have already noticed that not all the events in the S.W. Section get mentioned on this page. Thats because your scribe doesn't attend them all and he doesn't get feed back from many of the event organisers. So if you want a report of what happened at your 'do' posted here for all the world to see tell the webmaster!

Robbo's Rally Sixpenny Handley 6-8 May 2011

About 18 arrived in lovely warm sunshine and were able to put up their tents at lesiure. It was nice to see some new faces and the regular ones there was some rain during the evening and a few cracks of thunder and quite a good lighning show for everyone, most people spent the evening in the new gazebo, hoping it wasn't going to blow away. The Ride out on Saturday was taken by Paul and Rick from Southern section, it was a shame the Run leader had to be jump started before everyone could leave, the rain must have got in somewhere. No one got lost and they all returned to tea and cake later in the afternoon. Thanks Paul and Rick. Saturday night we had lots of rain and it was very windy, while himself was snoring I was worried the gazebo would be on the church tower in the morning, but it wasn't. It was a good weekend and we hope everyone enjoyed themselves and thank you all for coming.

Midweek Rideout 11th May

We met at Morrisons car park at 11am, 9 bikes + 1 pillion, from as far afield as Paul from Falmouth, and Brian from Torbay, his first time out with the south west group, plus Robin from St Neots with his very nicely restored R45. We set off in the sunshine for a scenic route to Tavistock then down to Plymouth and a visit to Ocean BMW where we were welcomed with a complimentary cup of coffee, very nice, a rest and a peruse around the new bikes, with particular interest in the new 1600. We then set of for Lydford then on to Okehampton railway station tea rooms, which we found to be closed! After some discussion we went back to Sourton Cross truck stop, where we were treated to afternoon tea and cake on the BMW club.We felt this was a good turn out for our first midweek ride.

Sat. F '&' C Rideout to Rick Steins 14th May

We set off from Saltash services with 4 bikes and 2 pillions to Okehampton where we met another 5 bikes and 1 pillion at Sourton services. In sunshine but with a chilly wind we set off for North Devon with 8 bikes and 3 pillions (nice to see the ladies out). We lost Pete who decided to meet us later. We travelled via Copplestone, South Molton and Arlington passing through, in the pillions' opinion, pretty villages and lovely views. The riders enjoyed some great twisty roads, then back to Barnstaple. At Bucks Cross we stopped in the Merry Harriers for a scrumptious cream tea which was enjoyed by all, courtesy of the BMW club. After much appreciation, we set off for Bude for a fuel top up, then on Boscastle for a break, and down the coast to arrive at 5.30 at Padstow for Ricks fish and chips, which was excellent as usual. This rounded a good day out covering about 170 miles on some stunning roads.

Bodmin Moor Murder Mystery 22nd May

THE DETECTIVES

Murder Mystery Rideout........................Purpose...Fun. Someone who is much disliked is murdered, there are ten suspects, ten different weapons, aim is to find the murderer and weapon used by searching for clues in the booklet provided. Mileage is about sixty and takes circa five hours. We started at Jamaica Inn at 11am and departed at five minute intervals towards' Minions' using a minor road that follows the River Fowey. The first few clues were in and around Minions, a place you would not normally visit; eerie, with a long history in mining from the iron age. From there it was over scenic moorland to Golitha Falls for a pee break and clues in the woodland, then back, via different roads to Bolventor and Colliford Dam where by now half of the clues were done. We stopped at Jamaica Inn for a late lunch where a 'talking' clue was to be found. Starting off for the second part we found the wind had dropped to a force seven though it had not rained at all. At the tiny village of St. Neots more clues came to light and all seemed to be enjoying themselves having been to places that were so out of the way. Travelling across moorland to Blisland the clues there were of witches and graveyards, medievil and dark. Onward next to St Breward we stopped next to the pub (funny that) and finished the clues and all except one got the correct murderer and weapon, i forget who it was that ended up with two perpetrators and one weapon! As the moorland area is bleak one can ponder the lives of people who worked the land, mines and quarries, eg the De Lank Quarry supplied the granite for Eddystone and Beachy Lighthouses and the Tower Bridge. We were all now glad of tea and cake at the clubs expense with a good natter and agreement that it was a FUN DAY.

Where were you ?

You should have been here instead of polishing your bike in your dreams.

Mendips Tour 19th June

Well the sun shone as ordered on the chosen few for the three legged Mendip Hills ride out on the 19th, 6 riders in all and all on different models of BMW. The first stop was at a very nice tea room in Frome which had a very relaxed and homely atmosphere, so much so that one of the locals was sound asleep as we left with the staff content to let him be. On the way we passed through very old towns and villages and much to many the surprise of an ancient castle in the village of Nunney together with the obligatory moat and duck pond built around the 1370s by a local knight called Sir John De La Mere. From the tea room we tracked back to Nunney turning right over an ancient bridge under which flowed the small river that fed the castle moat. Passing through many small villages, too small for HGVs in fact. we eventually came out onto the A371 where we headed for Wells making our way to the next stop by some more villages on the Mendips at Chew Valley Lake, a very pleasant stopping point much frequented by motor cyclists. Suitably refreshed again we headed for higher ground and more villages to observe some of the wonderful panoramas that can be viewed in clear daylight eventually coming off of the hills via Cheddar Gorge and the ancient town of Axbridge with its medieval square and St John's Hunting Lodge. Our last stop was at Weston Super Mare where more refreshments was had in the Victorian tea room opposite the motor cycle park. My apologies for not arranging the free tea and cake, normally this would have been at the end of the run and not the beginning - it won't happen again.

Midweek Rideout 21st June

4 of us gathered at Exeter Services for a day out. It was decided a leisurely trip was in order so we started with a run up onto Dartmoor and Chagford, where we had a good look round Bowden's shop. This is an 'Arkwrights' on steroids; you can get everything from an MP3 player to a paraffin pressure lamp here with guns, foot trimming knives and garlic presses thrown in for good measure. I'd been looking for a decent small combination padlock and found a range of Abus in about six different sizes! After a cup of coffee, we wound through the narrow lanes of the moor to Princetown and the Old Police House cafe for lunch, then on to Ocean BMW in Plymouth for a free coffee and to look at all the latest toys. Finally, an hour's run took us to Dartmouth and a cream tea on the Station Restaurant patio, sitting in the sunshine watching the river traffic. We had quite a few laughs, ate lots of things we weren't supposed to, poked and prodded the latest toys and had a good wander around the countryside. Not a bad way to spend a day!

Mid Summer Rally - 1st to 3rd July

The Southwest Section Summer Rally. Whow!! Bright sunshine and hot temperatures greated our guests on their arrival and continued throughout the weekend. Thank you to the 19 who camped, all the day visitors who called in and, those who joined us only for the fish and chip supper on Saturday night. With the aid of my 8 year old grandson Reece, who acted as 'mini marshall', everyone was quickly shown to their pitch to get settled in, and get to the kitchen for tea and cake. My plan for the weekend is for everyone to 'chill out' and do as much or as little as they want. This meant that some of us stayed on the camp site during Saturday to watch the cricket match, while others went out for a ride and a cream tea. As usuall there was an element of suprise during the weekend, with the launch of a hot air baloon on both Friday and Saturday evenings and a cricket match during Saturday afternoon. It was a cricket match with a difference, all the fielders had a can of cider on the pitch, with the game interupted for refreshment breaks (more cider), a tea break of sandwiches and more cider, and finaly a celebration of the result with more cider. Oh, for those intrested in the result I believe it was draw and a huge hangover. The local Morrisons just across the road from the site, did a roaring trade in breakfasts, wine and beer. Thanks to all who came, travelling from as far away as Halifax, Wigan, Hull, Hinkley, Bristol and the Southwest. The prize for the furthest travelled was won by Ross Cammeron from Hull who had covered 287.6 miles. Thank to Les at Traveldri Plus for the prize and some of the 'lucky dip' prizes, which raised over £40 for the section charity account. (By the way, the shortest travelled camper was Dunc, who went the long way around Tiverton and managed to cover 1.6 miles.) The feed back we recieved was that the rally was very freindly and relaxed, in a great site with good facilities. My thanks to those attended, and those who helped Sylv and I to make the weekend enjoyable for all. We've provisionaly booked the rugby club again for next year, we hope to see you all again.

Paignton Bike Night - 6th July

Ron Lyford was the only one that went and wishes he hadn't. This is his report. The Do was literaly a washout, floods of rain across the roads and rainbows. There was only 25 bikes there in total and the marshals went home at about 7:00pm. I went and had fish & chips on my own, dripping wet and getting dodgy looks, freezing cold...O what a fun night I had ??? I was Kept motivated by the thought of the £5 I will get of Sally next time I see her.
Ron

I will see if I can find a waterproof one!

St. Merryn Fish '&' Chip run 13th July

concours and BBQ 31st July

What a great afternoon we had at the Weary Traveller! The weather was dry and warm, for the 33 bikes that turned up, plus about 20 other guests who came on other makes of motorcycle and in cars. Thank you to the members who attended, and to the guests who swelled the numbers. Sally is giving the details of the winners separately. Congratulations to all who won a trophy, the members choice was a hotly fought 3 way split with the final winner being chosen with a draw from my hat by a lady sitting quitely relaxing in the beer garden. If you have won a trophy please remeber to return it to a member of the committee before next years event. Please get your details engraved on the trophy, getting a VAT receipt for the cost and send to John Robinson (section treasurer) who will reimburse this cost. To those who didn't win better luck next year, but console yourself at least the BBQ was excellent and was enjoyed by 37 of us. I have some people to thank, without whose help I could not run the event so here goes, Steve and the Weary Traveller team, Wally from C W Motorcycles who had the difficult job of judging the entries and then presented the trophies, also Sally and the voiceless Sylv for their efforts distributing the BBQ tickets, coordinating the results and getting the trophies in the correct order, and finally once more again thanks to all of you who attended and made it a memorable event.

Whiddon Down Ride out 14th August

This should have been Dave Coopers run but as he was otherwise engaged I took it. We started at Whiddon Down with nine bikes and ten people. at 10-45am and rode across to Winkleigh then on to Torrington. Because of Road closure we rode across to Barnstable and then down the A39 to Westward Ho for coffee break and cake. Pete had a big cake but would not share,I think he is taking lessons from Brian?. It was quite warm in the sun but we moved on to Hartland Quay for Lunch. Andy and Brian managed to find a table and we all ordered lunch. It was nice and clear and you could see Lundy Island quite clear. After lunch we rode back over the moor and down through Kilkhampton,Bude and on to Widemouth Bay for cream teas. Hope everybody had a nice day out.

TAVISTOCK CAMPING WEEKEND 2-4TH SEPTEMBER

Phil and I were pleased to welcome the two Daves,Robin,Paul and Peter, five men armed with tents on their bikes to our first ever camping weekend for our Section, at Harford Bridge Camping Park, near Tavistock,on the edge of Dartmoor. Lovely sunny weather was a great start on the Friday of arrival, perfect for pitching tents and erecting the gazebo adjacent to our caravan where we all got together in the afternoon for a tea and cake introduction natter, prefering to sit at the sites table and chairs outside, soaking up the warm sunshine. Later that evening the seven of us tucked into our local butchers[large!]pasties, my rubarb crumble, custard and/or cream, washed down with a few beers and more chat,a perfect end to a good day. Saturday morning saw three more men,Paul,George,Bryan and their bikes, arrive for our Dartmoor rideout, not forgetting Helen who called in to say hello but sadly had to leave again after refreshments, owing to other committments. This was reassuring given the weather forecast was for heavy rain coming in that day, but not perturbed by this,a prompt start at 11am of ten bikes left the campsite, riding past Princetown prison and village,Two Bridges then a lovely scenic narrow winding road towards Buckfastleigh, making our first stop at the car park opposite Venford Reservoir for photos, history lesson and leg stretch. Onward then to Buckfast Abbey where we spent an hour or so doing our own thing, whether it be lunch in the cafe, gift shops, inside the Abbey or a stroll around the nicely kept garden and grounds and no admission charge for the privilege! By 1-30pm, when setting off on Part 2 of the ride out, we amazingly had still not seen any rain, only the threat of dark clouds looming with even a glimpse of sunshine sometimes following us heavenly souls! A leisurely ride through scenic villages,Buckland and Widecombe on the Moor,Manaton,Ponsworthy,Dartmeet, coupled with purple heather/yellow gorse moorland as far as ones eyes could see, we completed our journey back at Princetown where a delish cream tea each went down a treat, in the Old Police Station Cafe. On return to the bikes in the car park around 4pm,we all parted company, some either headed for home, back to the campsite or to Morrisons for fuel and supplies. By this time, the rain could hold off no longer and continued into the evening but weren't we so lucky until then. With gazebo in place, table and chairs inside,no problem enjoying a takeaway fish and chip supper from nearby Tavistock [courtesy of the MX5!] more beer, wine and laughs and continual great 'Jethro' style jokes told by Robin and Dave C [wish I could remember them like you] Only the occasional interruption of rain puddles falling off the gazebo roof caused a stir as I did wonder if it was a horse that had joined us. You'll know what I mean, guys!!
Thankyou All for your support and good company of what turned out to be a great weekend. Do hope we can repeat the venue and another rideout next year, check out DOE 2012. PS: Hope your journey back to Aussie went well, Dave, it was really good to see you again.
Debbie Sampson

MEAL AND NATTER NIGHT 14TH sEPTEMBER

For a change, a natter night replaced the Looe fish and chip night, as September nights are starting to close in. The Liskeard Tavern was chosen as the venue. As this is one of the new larger types of eating and drinking establishments. It was felt they would cope better without booking a table for the 14 members who turned up. They were very busy for a Wednesday night but they coped very well and managed to have all who were eating sat at the same table. Nice to see Charles recovered from his ops and out and about on his bike, a very enjoyable evening was had all.

HIPPO WEEKEND 4 - 6 nOVEMBER

Friday started wet and everyone travelled through rain on their journey to Bodmin, but were able to get their tents up in the dry. All received a hot pasty, coffee and a muffin to welcome them. Thanks to Les and Debbie. In the bar in the evening Dave C said a few words about the history of the Hippo Rally and two founder organisers got confused about the date of the first rally. The birthday cake was cut by Chris Baker from Grimsby, one of the founder organisers, and everyone enjoyed a glass of fiz to go with it. Karaoke followed as did more pop and several had a go at "singing".

..

Saturday dawned with brilliant sunshine and after a hearty cooked breakfast there was a Ride Out to Lands End with Dave C . 11 bikes and 1 pillion had a good day out. Thanks Dave. On site there was Clay Shooting with Phil, Don and Bryan in charge. Thanks guys for being out side all day, at least it was sunny. When everyone returned from their day out, fireworks were let off in an adjoining field. 62 people sat down to a 3 course meal with coffee after. The music was provided by Peter Kirk from Barnstaple and after more pop some got up to have a dance. Don and Sue could have given the rest of us a few lessons, they were good. During the interval the Rally Prizes were awarded. Oldest Bike award went to Richard Tavener, Youngest Bike award went to Mark Haydock, The Furthest Lady Travelled award went to Cas Drage from Leeds. Debbie and myself were presented with some flowers by Dave , for all our sleepless nights and extra grey hairs while getting everything organised. It was a good evening and the last ones got to bed about 1.30am, including me. Sunday was bright and sunny again, which didn't help the "woolly heads" these included the Nat. Sec., but after another hearty breakfast everyone felt well enough to break camp and get ready for the journey home.

I hope everyone enjoyed themselves, I did! And I look forward to seeing you all again next year.

If you didn't get your Hippo tee shirt, I still have a few left. Large size only (42 inch chest)

Christmas Carvery The Weary Traveller
11th December

Pub meet at The Weary Traveller 11th December. The weather this was kind to us, only pouring with rain as we left to go home. We commented that at least this year we weren't having to negotiate the ice in the frozen car park at the pub. 34 folks turned up for the annual section pre Christmas carvery, among them were members from both the western and the southern sections, some having travelled a fairway to join us. Sylv and I thank you for coming and hope you all had a goodtime.

Enjoy Christmas Chris & Silv.

BOXING DAY AT THE WEARY TRAVELLER

Weary Traveller Boxing Day Pub Meet - Well what a difference a year makes, last year the pub was frozen solid, today it was almost like a spring day, pleasantly warm with a light breeze. Thank you to the seven members who made the meet. We welcomed on his first visit to the Southwest Section, Nigel Macenzie from Cheddar. Although new to our section, Nigel has rejoined to the club having been a member of other sections in the past, as he has recently returned to riding BM's after a spell on Triumphs. The pub doesn't serve food on Boxing Day but Steve our host makes an exception for us and did bowls of chips all round. Hope you all enjoyed the break from the festive excesses of Christmas.
Chris & Silv.

8 members reported to Moto for the Mystery Tour. We headed east through Ottery, Beer, Seaton, Axmouth, Lyme and Wootton Fitzpaine to Chideock for lunch.... the sun shone, the sea views were cracking and spring in all its glory smiled at us along the way. Beaminster, Evershot, Frampton, Abbotsbury and on to West Bay for a cuppa, cake and retail therapy in Helmet City. Many thanx to those that came to play. photo taken at West Bay by a passing parking warden !

John Dyke's Ride Out 22nd April

Twelve of us met at the Woodleigh Coach House Cafe at Cheriton Bishop with the object of visiting a privately owned 'Norton' museum in Brixham as the owner Ian had invited us to his open day. We made straight for the South Devon fishing resort in fine weather and were rewarded by the most amazing collection of bikes of all types, sizes and ages, from a workaday RAC 16H combo to rotaries, OHV and OHC models, singles and twins. The exception to the 'Norton' rule which I spotted was an AA combination - by BSA, as they didn't use Nortons! Every bike was in absolutely splendid order and was displayed on light green carpet, albeit with drip trays and polythene sheeting under the engines. While lingering over lunch at a local cafe beside the 1000 yard breakwater, the skies opened and it gave our bikes a good soaking while we sheltered as long as we dared. Several of us turned for home at that point, but the remaining 8 rode on down to the higher ferry to Dartmouth, and travelled along the lovely coast road through Stoke Fleming, Blackpool Sands and Strete to the Slapton Line where the road passes over a 3 mile causeway between sea and fresh water. We had an ice cream break at Torcross and viewed the Sherman tank which had been erected as a memorial to the 946 US servicemen who died during the practice for the 1944 D-Day Landings having been brought to the surface in 1984 after 40 years in the briny, snagging fishermens' nets. The recovery was organized by the remarkable Ken Small who revealed the story of the disaster in his book, 'The Forgotten Dead'. We rode on through lovely villages to Kingsbridge and Totnes where we split up to go our separate ways, vowing to return in finer weather to see the country at it's best.

John Dyke

Weary Traveller Meet 29th April

Well what can I say except a big thank you to the 8 hardy souls who attended, braving 50 to 60 mph winds, driving rain, bitterly cold temperatures, fallen trees and flood water. A ripple of applause greeted both Pete Fletcher and Ron Lydford when they arrived as they'd come on a motorcycle and a trike. Brave all weather riders. The rest of us had come in the car, although by the time we left the pub and went home a small boat may have been more suitable. Still we had a great lunch and lots of chat, catching up with friends etc. It sounds as though there is a lot happening in the section this summer, with pub meets ,Fish and Chip evenings, ride outs and rallies. Please don't forget the Summer Rally at Tiverton Rugby Club on the weekend of 6th, 7th of July, the cost is £14.00 per person for the weekend and this includes a fish and chip supper on Saturday evening. The BBQ and concours is at the end of July, can last years winners please ensure that the trophies you won are returned ready for this year. If your bringing a trophy back on the day please let our social sec or me know. Thanks again to those who came today, Ron I think the trike looks great, I look forward to being able to have a closer, longer and dryer look at it in the summer. Ride safe.

Chris & Sylv.
